Schaumburg Wildlife Education: Is it against the law to kill a bat?

The idea of a bat inhabiting your home is enough to make most people cringe. Few people are aware of the fact that bats eat thousands of insects a day. Some species consume up to 3 000 mosquitoes daily. This in itself makes them pretty handy to have around. Even though bats can carry the rabies virus, they do not pose a danger to humans.

Federal policy
While the government has sympathy for the nuisance that is caused by bats, they do not permit killing them. There are even bat species that are protected by the Endangered Species Act. The laws regarding these creatures vary from state to state. However, in order to extract them, you should contact a pest removal specialist. Most states require a license to operate a pest removal company. Thus, your safest bet would be to contact someone who adheres to these requirements.

Policy on removal
Even though you are not permitted to kill bats in most states, you are allowed to evict them from your home. They are not dangerous creatures and are more scared of humans than we are of them. This does not mean you should handle a bat that you find in your home. Once bitten you might contract rabies. Bats are not any more likely to spread rabies than any other mammal.

Habitat
Not only bats but also their habitat is protected by law. Their habitat is protected by state law in various parts of the United States. In some countries, like the United Kingdom, all bat species are protected.

Exclusion
The law dictates that instead of killing bats in your home you should close up all opening where they can enter. This is called exclusion. In order to complete this, you will need to make sure that the bats have vacated your property. Then you should close even the smallest opening in the façade. This means that the bat will be unable to return to its nest. Once a female bat has decided your home would make an appropriate breeding place they are extremely difficult to get rid of. Thus, it would be easier to do it before they give birth to babies in your attic.

Getting help
As most people do not relish the thought of handling a bat, a professional wildlife removal specialist would remain your most convenient option. They will ensure that all of the bats have evacuated your home before helping you seal up all openings. They will also make sure that there are no babies left in your attic. Separating the female bat from her young will lead to certain death. Do not attempt to take care of the babies if you do find them abandoned. They do not make good pets. You will need to make sure that all traces of bat guano and urine is removed from your home. It is advisable to clean the area with an antibacterial solution.
